Light Study
This basement renovation serves as a study contrast between old and
new, light and surface. The Silverstate Laundry building was
constructed in 1894 and served as a laundry facility for ninety years.
After various program changes, the building was renovated in 2002 into
39 loft units, one of which included the only basement. The
unfinished space included board formed concrete walls and a unique
abandoned concrete stair. The program consisted of a Murphy bed,
window seat, wine rack (in the old stair), and home theater. Light
became the medium of exploration for this project. The concrete walls
were taken as an opportunity to expose the history and craft of the 100
year old construction by down lighting the existing face.
